Canada wins 3 medals at the first long track speed skating World Cup of the season in Berlin….NESBITT 2 Gold and MORRISON the Bronze.
Christine was dominant in the 1500m winning by 1.5 seconds. This is like winning 6-0 in Hockey. The next day Nesbitt still had enough energy to win the 1000m as well showing the world she is ready for this Olympic season. On his side, Denny Morrison took the bronze in the 1500m race where Shani Davis (USA) broke the track record.
Back in Canada, short track speed skaters won 4 medals over the weekend at the World Cup in Montreal. François-Louis Tremblay took Silver in the team 5000m relay, Tremblay was unfortunate to have been stuck in an incident during the final of the 500m race. He settled for 4th while teammate Charles Hamelin skated to Gold.
Still on the ice, Joannie Rochette is back from China where she won Bronze in the first Grand Prix event of the year. She came back from a disappointing 7th place in the short program with a performance that showed good character.
In skeleton, Jeff Pain dominated Canadian selections on the Olympic track where his amazing off season work ethic and weight loss is paying off with faster starts. At the World Cup opener this past Thursday in Park City, Utah, Jeff was the top Canadian placing 6th while Michelle Kelly placed 5th on the women’s side.
On Friday, also at Park City, Helen Upperton placed 5th in the first World Cup bobsleigh race while Lyndon Rush placed 7th. Both Helen and Lyndon were top Canadians in each race. To cap things off, Lyndon won Gold in the four man race Saturday nite !
All other athletes will start their competition season shortly.
Stay tuned!
